Building Trust With a Shy Pet

Some rescues arrive confident; others arrive convinced the world is suspicious. Shy pets are not broken — they are careful. Trust is built in small deposits, and this is how to make them.

Let the animal set the pace. Sit on the floor nearby and read a book. Toss treats without eye contact. The pets who take longest to approach are often the ones who bond hardest once they do.

Pair yourself with good things. You deliver meals, you open doors to the garden, you produce the good treats. Within days, most shy pets start checking where you went — the first sign of attachment.

"Patience is not waiting around. It is showing up, kindly, every single day."

Celebrate tiny wins out loud. First nose-boop, first play-bow, first night sleeping outside the crate — these are milestones. Tell us about them; our support line exists exactly for the wobbly middle weeks.
