The First Week Home With Your Rescue

The first seven days set the tone for everything. Your new rescue is learning your smells, your sounds, and your rules — all at once. Here is how to make that week calm, safe, and full of naps.

Start small. Give your pet one quiet room with a bed, water, and a worn t-shirt that smells like you. Let them explore the rest of the house over several days, not hours. Most accidents and hiding spells come from too much freedom, too fast.

Keep routines boring on purpose. Same feeding times, same walking route, same sleep spot. Predictability is how a nervous animal learns that this strange new place is actually permanent.

"A rescue does not need a perfect home on day one. They need a patient one."

Book a vet visit within the first week, even though every HavenTails adoption includes a full health check. It introduces your pet to their new doctor while they are healthy — and gives you a chance to ask every question you saved up.
